Saturation & Gaps
Some areas are starting to feel crowded. For example, there are loads of English player biographies, especially focusing on the recent Lionesses, and the histories of the US Women’s National Team often cover the same events but with different takes. There’s also a big stack of children’s picture books aimed at the under-7s that tend to feel quite similar. But despite all this, there are some clear gaps and exciting opportunities. For instance, we see very little representation from the Global South - places like Africa, Asia, and South America are mostly missing from the conversation. The early days of women’s football, especially before the 1990s, haven’t been explored much either. Plus, there are very few books written by players who don’t speak English as their first language, which means lots of voices are missing. Club histories outside England and the US are rare, too. On the fiction side, adult contemporary stories are starting to grow, but it’s still a pretty niche market. So, while some markets are saturated, there’s plenty of space to tell new stories and reach new audiences.
